Remaking the World: Adventures in Engineering, by Henry Petroski

This collection of informative and pleasurable essays by Henry Petroski elucidates the role of engineers in shaping our environment in countless ways, big and small.

In Remaking the World Petroski gravitates this time, perhaps, toward the big: the English Channel tunnel, the Panama Canal, Hoover Dam, the QE2, and the Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, now the tallest buildings in the world. He profiles Charles Steinmetz, the genius of the General Electric Company; Henry Martyn Robert, a military engineer who created Robert's Rules of Order; and James Nasmyth, the Scotsman whose machine tools helped shape nineteenth-century ocean and rail transportation. Petroski sifts through the fossils of technology for cautionary tales and remarkable twists of fortune, and reminds us that failure is often a necessary step on the path to new discoveries. He explains soil mechanics by way of a game of  "rock, scissors, paper," and clarifies fundamental principles of engineering through the spokes of a Ferris wheel.

Most of all, Henry Petroski continues to celebrate the men and women whose scrawls on the backs of envelopes have immeasurably improved our world.

Amazon.com Review
Engineers, Henry Petroski observes, are sometimes their own worst enemies, at least so far as communicating their work to the general public is concerned. Some engineers, of course, have been exceptions. One of the unlikely heroes of Petroski's Remaking the World, an entertaining foray into some of engineering's finest (and, on occasion, less exalted) moments, is Karl August Rudolf Steinmetz, who combined a great talent for design and engineering with a keenly practiced flair for self-promotion. Another is Washington Gale Ferris, the inventor of the Ferris wheel, who concocted several dangerous eyesores before arriving at the design familiar to amusement-park patrons.

Successful at explaining themselves or not, engineers are largely responsible for the world as we know it, and Petroski examines their work to discuss how good design and technology combine to produce the desired results. That combination involves much trial and error, and, as Petroski writes, "artifacts from paper clips to steamships evolve by removing some real or perceived failure of their ancestors to achieve unqualified success." Drawing on examples from past and present, Petroski offers an up-close view of how engineers do their work, and his history is full of surprises and pleasures. --Gregory McNamee

From Library Journal
Petroski, perhaps best known for The Pencil (LJ 3/1/90) and The Evolution of Useful Things (LJ 12/92), here collects columns written originally as essays for American Scientist, an engineering society publication. As such, the 18 selections, aimed at raising the reader's consciousness about how important and far-reaching engineering is to civilization and society, are accessible to a lay readers with an interest in technology and society. Several pieces are about particular engineers (e.g., Henry Robert, who wrote the Rules of Order, was first a military engineer) or engineering projects (the Channel Tunnel, the Ferris Wheel); others are provocative (the flaws of engineering software, the creep of technology). Always well written, though seldom off the "engineering is crucial!" soapbox, this is an excellent choice for general collections with a literate readership interested in technology?and a good gift for the engineers on your Christmas list.?Mark L. From Kirkus Reviews
A disappointingly flat collection of musings on engineering history. Petroski's concern, as in previous works such as The Pencil (1990), is the interdependence of engineering and society--the role of engineers in shaping the world we live in, but also the fact that engineering's achievements are driven not purely by technology but by economics, politics, and culture. But in demonstrating these truths through chronicles of great engineered projects and portraits of interesting engineers like Isambard Kingdom Brunel, he largely leaves out the ingredient that would really enlighten the reader--the engineering itself. ``The tapering at the top of the building demanded some especially tricky structural engineering,'' Petroski hints, with regard to Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers, the world's tallest. But he leaves it at that, satisfied to provide a sketchy account of the building's materials and facilities, and a slight chronology of the project. Similarly, ``improvements in tunneling, such as the chore of getting rid of the soil,'' would seem to be a main topic in the history of the Channel Tunnel, but that phrase appears merely as a transition in Petroski's lifeless parade of 19th-century tunnel plans. Without using his tantalizing examples--pioneering soil mechanicist Karl Terzaghi and the rise and decline of the transatlantic steamship--to explain any engineering principles, they remain little more than aimless encyclopedia entries. Perhaps this is because they were written for a scientifically oriented audience (most appeared in American Scientist), with the intention of highlighting the historical and social context. Still, only occasionally, as in a chapter using the various uses of wireless communication to illustrate the unpredictable evolution of technology, do they seem to ascend above the assembled facts to a salient idea. Petroski is a little petulant about the respect engineering gets (as from the executors of Alfred Nobel's bequest), but he's squandered an opportunity to propagate a real sense of the science and labor of builders and inventors. For Petroski Fans Only
By Steve Harrison
This is a collection of articles written for Petrowski's monthly column in American Scientist magazine. Many are brief biographies of 19th-century engineers; a (very) few look (very) briefly at particular pieces of historical engineering (an article on the Ferris wheel is probably the best); others are ruminations on such hazards of the engineering practice as the stress that keeps them up at night and their failure to be awarded Nobel prizes. These seem quite satisfactory articles for a magazine column but they are slender stuff for a book. And Petroski's tendency to return to the same subjects, pardonable in a monthly column, becomes repetitive when the columns are collected. All but die-hard Petroski fans can skip this one

Excellent Read
By Jim T
This is a fine tome about engineering for those of us who scraped thru algebra! Should be required reading for *every* high school student. It gives a lot of basic information in understandable writing. Such as how did radio get to where it is today. Because of yacht racing... Now if that doesn't tease the brain, I don't know what else will...

Spendid short essays - (a must for any Petroski fan)
By from the US
I'm like those awful teachers who rarely give "10s" (although Petroski's The Pencil would get a 10!) Despite his protestation that these are slightly altered essays for the "American Engineer", as I recall, - he'd be hurt to realize that it's not common reading for most of us. For me it was all new territory - not covered in prior Petroski books and full of the interesting mix of social history and engineering history that he does so well. The order is arbitrary - except for the first chapter which is a bit autobiographical and perhaps should be read first - but I mostly skipped to topics I felt like reading and did them in my own order. My only criticisms are that a) the essays have some but could have used a bit more visuals - diagrams or photographs and b) many chapters - maybe not all but many - could easily have supported treatment at greater length. But I am a very tough grader. Also maybe at hardcover prices the publisher could be chided for not including more of the colums, this is a selection from thirty or so - and I doubt that Petroski was the parsimonious one! (but you can grab it while Amazon.com has it at 30% off) Its definitely nice to have this collection of columns from a journal I don't ever see, wrapped up in one volume.

one of the definitive books on cult films.
By Cubist
This is one of the first serious film books I ever picked up. The picture of ol' Jack Nance from David Lynch's Eraserhead is what caught my eye. After reading the first paragraph of the first chapter, I was hooked.
Written by, arguably, the two best critics around -- J. Hoberman (who writes for the Village Voice) and Jonathan Rosenbaum (who writes for the Chicago Reader) -- this is an excellent look at a bygone era of movie-going. They document the midnight movie circuit that used to exist across the country for films too weird and strange for mainstream consumption. Sadly, most of these theatres are gone now -- swallowed up by the multiplex monster.
These guys clearly did their homework -- their chapters on the early careers of Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, John Waters and George Romero are definitive. Best of all, their writing style is never dry or academic but very readable (it helps that these guys write for weeklies).
This book is a must-have for any fan of cult movies (and esp. the above mentioned directors). I have read it many, many times and it inspired me to be a writer myself. Great stuff.

A Great Book on Cult Films
By The Czar of Arkansas
Long, long ago, in the age before the videocassette and enormous theater chains, a strange cultural phenomenon once existed: the midnight movie. Movies that either couldn't get a regular run or had gotten one and bombed were often exhibited at midnight in independent theaters to audiences craving a different experience. Jonathan Rosenbaum and J. Hoberman explore this all-but-extinct cinematic experience in Midnight Movies.

Midnight Movies begins with an exploration of the beginning of the midnight phenomenon, harkening back to the 40's and 50's cult and exploitation films which gave rise to the art films of the 1960's. Films from Jack Smith, Luis Bunel, Hershell Gordon Lewis, and Andy Warhol are discussed. Many of these films, while unimportant on their own, pushed boundaries and proved that a small commercial market existed for off-beat cinema. Midnight Movies then moves on to explore the impact on film and audiences of four midnight offerings: Alexandro Jodorowsky's El Topo, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, John Waters' Pink Flamingos, and David Lynch's Eraserhead.

Jodorowsky's El Topo was perhaps the first major midnight movie, playing for weeks at midnight in various New York venues. El Topo begins as a western, although the film gets more surreal and philosophical as each reel is spun. The film chronicles the story of a gunfighter who must kill four master sharpshooters to prove his love for a girl he snatches from one of his victims. As strange as it is oddly religious, El Topo was a sensation that attracted a superstar audience for this Mexican import.

Far from Mexico--in the exotic locales of western Pennsylvania--the next midnight sensation was under construction. George Romero, while working for an ad agency, began shooting Night of the Living Dead. The entire film cost $114,000, most of which was deferred until after distribution, and grossed millions, making Night of the Living Dead the most profitable film ever released until The Blair Witch Project. Romero was influenced by B-movies and sci-fi/horror comics of the 50's, but denies that Night of the Living Dead was ever made to make the many social points later attributed to it by critics. However, the film lives on as a landmark horror film.

If critics endlessly debated the social gravity of Night of the Living Dead, they didn't waste much breath on the work of John Waters. Dedicated to bad taste, Waters' Pink Flamingos comes in for the next examination. A film about two families competing for the title of "filthiest family in the world," Pink Flamingos has something to disgust or offend nearly everyone: crossdressing, kidnapping, adult babies, gratuitous violence, homosexuality, illicit baby farms, and porn, just to name a few. Waters' work, which has clearly evolved over the years, was loved by midnight audiences for its outrageousness and lack of pretension.

Whatever pretension Waters lacked was more than made up by the book's final director and film, David Lynch's Eraserhead. Eraserhead is the nonnarrative story of Henry, who wanders through a postmodern industrial wasteland. Henry is contacted by an old girlfriend, Mary, who claims to have given birth to Henry's child. The baby, if it can be scientifically called that, is a complete grotesquerie, which Mary abandons to Henry's care while Henry daydreams about a woman who lives in his apartment's radiator. Eraserhead really can't be adequately explained, it can only be experienced. Like the far more commercial Altered States, it is a nihilistic journey probably best taken with some chemical substance. Its billing as a "nightmare vision of the future" was right on target, at least for Lynch's future: Lynch continues to get paid by big studios in the bleak hope he'll make another Elephant Man, when he really just makes very slick versions of Eraserhead.

If you're a film junkie, this book is really a must-read. Hoberman and Rosenbaum do an excellent job of discussing the making of each film, the personalities involved, and the cultural climate into which each film was released. Although the opening sections concerning underground film in the 40's and 50's were a bit long, in my opinion, the reader gets a great story not merely of how these films were made and distributed, but how audiences and fans experienced these midnight movies.

A CULT CLASSIC IN ITSELF!
By DrSpecter
A lot of these directors have had entire books written about them since this book was published, but the authors manage to make this book so entertaining and fascinating that I've reread it twice-- I usually just read nonfiction once and then use it for reference. If they would put England's The Incredibly Strange Film Show (and the spin-offs Son Of... and For One Week Only)out on DVD, it would rival this book. Until then, this is the most vital source of information on cult movies.

Review

"Science Fiction and Philosophy brings two areas together and into a dialogue: philosophy holds the fantasmatic enjoyment of science fiction to account for its illusions and awesome possibilities while science fiction reminds philosophy that all reason and no play makes thought a very dull thing indeed. Hopefully, this volume will find its way into the hands of those who wish to discover something about the highly technological world-view and horizon of meaning of our current epoch." (Discover Magazine, November 2010)

"Science Fiction and Philosophy: From Time Travel to Superintelligence (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2009), Schneider mines time travel, artificial intelligence, robot rights, teleportation, and genetic modification to discuss the nature of space and time, free will, transhumanism, the self, neuroethics, and reality." (Discover, December 2010)

"Divided into five parts following themes arising from central questions in metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics, it intimately and intelligently ties works of art, which vividly bring to life the aforementioned thought experiments, together with exceptionally thought-provoking philosophical articles inspired and enlightened by the storytelling. It is not, as some edited collections tend to be, a disparate aggregate, but a successful marriage of art with analytic philosophy. It supports not only Schneider's but an even stronger argument: that a good science fiction story is very often a philosophical argument in disguise. If science fiction and philosophy give you pleasure, you may enjoy reading this hook immensely." (Mind & Machines, Fall 2010)

“Looking over the pages one can see Schneider's attention to detail … .Schneider has obviously made her choices for their accessibility and we should applaud her for this … .The collection stands as an important and provocative dialogue between two very rich areas of contemporary cultures and societies. Science Fiction and Philosophy gives us a chance to redeem science fiction … and take the questions it poses seriously and with a critical gaze. This volume will be of interest to audiences read in science fiction, philosophy of science, philosophy of time, philosophy of mind, consciousness studies, epistemology, robot ethics and bio-ethics and biotechnology and general audiences alike.” (Metapsychology)

Review
"I've always said that science fiction is a lousy name for this field; it's really philosophical fiction: phi-fi not sci-fi! This book proves that with its penetrating analysis of the genre's treatment of deep questions of reality, personhood, and ethics."
-- Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of Hominids

"Easily the best and most up-to-date book of its kind."
--Barry Dainton, University of Liverpool

From the Back Cover
Science fiction is more than mere entertainment. Historian H. Bruce Franklin defines it as “the literature which, growing with science and technology, evaluates it and relates it meaningfully to the rest of human existence.” Indeed, science fiction is increasingly converging with science fact. From the nature of mind to the ethics of AI and neural enhancement, science fiction thought experiments fire the philosophical imagination, encouraging us to think outside of the box about classic philosophical problems and even to envision new ones. For in certain cases, future technologies invite their own distinctive philosophical puzzles.

Science Fiction and Philosophy explores timely philosophical issues such as the nature of persons and their minds, puzzles about virtual reality, transhumanism, whether time travel is possible, the nature of artificial intelligence, and topics in neuroethics. This thought-provoking volume is suitable for students and general readers and at the same time examines new and more advanced topics of interest to seasoned philosophers and scientists.

worthy attempt, could have been done better
By Massimo Pigliucci
I am going to use this book for an undergraduate class on scifi and philosophy, so obviously I think well enough of it. The idea is certainly a good one, as science fiction - at its best - is all about broadly construed thought experiments, one of the primary tools of philosophers. The range of philosophical topics one can introduce via scifi is huge, and many of them are touched upon in this collection: virtual worlds and radical skepticism, free will and the nature of personhood, natural vs artificial minds, ethical and political philosophy, as well as the philosophy of time. There are two issues I wish the editor (Susan Schneider) would have paid more attention to (perhaps she will in future editions): first, and most obviously, there should be a tighter connection between the essays and the scifi movies that allegedly provide the impetus for the philosophical discussions. Instead, the movies are simply listed without comment at the beginning of each section, and pretty much never mentioned within the essays. This is, I think, because the essays themselves were not commissioned for this purpose (unlike several other "philosophy and pop culture" books out there). Still, the editor could have provided a better integration herself. My second issue is that some authors / points of view are overrepresented. In particular, Ray Kurzweil - the brilliant nut job who writes about the forthcoming singularity-based end of the world and co-authors books on how to stay young forever with a homeopath - gets two essays without even being a professional philosopher (and it shows). Still, all around a fascinating amount of food for thought, definitely recommended to anyone with an interest in scifi as a serious genre and who wishes to cogitate about philosophy in a lighthearted manner.

Course Worthy
By Craig Condella
As I largely concur with the previous views, I just wanted to add my own two cents. First, I used this book for a Philosophy & Science Fiction class and it worked wonderfully. Using films, short stories, and novels as the "raw materials," this collection alone was able to carry the philosophical weight of the course. My main advice to those interested in designing such a course would be to look in advance at the particular films and stories that play a central role in some of the key essays/articles (The Matrix, Minority Report, Mindscan, and Terminator come to mind).

Just a few criticisms that could (perhaps) be addressed in a new edition:

1.) there were some editing issues (typos and such) that detract from what is otherwise a well put-together volume.

2.) my students really struggled with the Ned Block piece, which was unfortunate since it was the only serious treatment of the Turing Test. A more approachable piece on Turing would be welcome.

3.) the one glaring omission was alien encounters. As such a central theme in science fiction, I feel that there should be at least one piece -- though perhaps a whole section -- devoted to encountering alien intelligences. This is a rich area philosophically as it offers us a chance to consider human "otherness" by way of alien "otherness." Again, such a piece would be a welcome addition.

Science-Fiction and Philosophy.
By New Age of Barbarism
_Science Fiction and Philosophy: From Time Travel to Superintelligence_ (2009) is a fascinating collection of philosophical essays dealing with issues that have been perennial themes in science-fiction edited by Susan Schneider. These essays show what was previously regarded solely as science-fiction or idle speculation has increasingly become the reality of science fact. The editor maintains that science-fiction serves as a useful source for thought experiments and philosophical puzzles. However, the issues presented by science-fiction are not solely mere puzzles. In fact, to further our understanding of science it is increasingly necessary to understand such conundrums and paradoxes so that we may come to understand the perennial issues that have haunted humanity since the dawn of our existence. Issues such as whether or not we live in the "Matrix" and computer simulation, free will and the nature of persons, the role of mind and our understanding of what an artificial intelligence might be, ethical questions raised by new technologies, artificial intelligence, bio-science, and the various political issues that accompany such questions, and finally the nature of space and time and whether time travel is possible (outside of the trivial case). The book provides a fascinating source for our understanding of the perspectives various modern philosophers and theorists have taken on such issues. In particular, with the enormous advance in technology, the development of modern science in terms of cognition, bio-science (genetic engineering, etc.), computers, and issues from theoretical physics, such timeless philosophical issues have again re-appeared in our age. This book offers a look at the fore-front of philosophical thinking concerning such issues. Highly recommended.

Eyes Wide Open! 100 Years of Leica PhotographyFrom Kehrer Verlag

A note in a workshop log proves that in 1914, Oskar Barnack put the finishing touches on the first working model of a compact camera for 35mm standard cinema film. He had not merely invented a new camera—the Leica (=Leitz/camera), not introduced until 1925 due to the war—he in fact ushered in a paradigm shift in photography.

Just in time to mark a milestone birthday of the legendary compact camera, and for the first time in this thematic breadth, this volume, with about eight hundred images, offers a wide artistic and cultural history of the Leica from the 1920s to the present day.

Essays by international authors examine topics including the technical genesis of the Leica, its influence on photojournalism, and its significance for a wide variety of avant-garde currents in art photography. Heretofore unpublished documents from the archives of the Leica Camera AG round off this multifaceted one-hundred-year cultural chronicle.

Includes photographs by Michael Ackerman, Jane Evelyn Atwood, Ilse Bing, René Burri, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Mark Cohen, Bruce Davidson, Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt, William Eggleston, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Alberto Garcia Alix, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Ralph Gibson, Bruce Gilden, René Groebli, George Grosz, Ara Güler, Elisabeth Hase, Fred Herzog, Frank Horvat, Thomas Hoepker, Barbara Klemm, William Klein, Robert Lebeck, Saul Leiter, Ulrich Mack, Ramón Masats, Susan Meiselas, Jeff Mermelstein, Joel Meyerowitz, Will McBride, László Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Rodtschenko, Paolo Roversi, Erich Salomon, Jeanloup Sieff, Klavdij Sluban, Louis Stettner, Christer Strömholm, Sabine Weiss, Kai Wiedenhöfer, Tom Wood, and many others.

Photography from a bygone age.
By davidbb
First the pros: It's a beautiful and informative book that I would recommend to anyone interested in 35mm photography. It is full of very informative articles relating to the history of the Leica instrument, and its uses in photojournalism; industrial photography; fashion photography; art photography...etc.etc. highlighting many of the photographers who used the Leica as their axe (tool). The book is loaded with wonderful photos covering the various genres.
The cons (and these are minor complaints given the scope of this wonderful book ) The book is obviously Germany biased in it's coverage of photographers. Though it does highlight photographers from all over the world, some of my favorites are missing: Where are photos of Mary Ellen Mark, Jerome Liebling...etc, etc?
Though some thousand photos are shown, many are in contact sheet form, or tear sheets with contact size positives pasted on; or pictures of open photo books showing a photo spread. In other words, thumbnail size. I have the urge to click the thumbnail to see a full size photo. Many photos were not printed from the original elements, but photographed from books. I'm sure this was necessary, as many of the original elements are probably gone with the wind. Sepia tone was over used in the book, IMO. There are beautiful full size photo spreads to be sure, but the thumbnails beg a fuller look.
One section, showing photos of the assembly of a Leica, is printed on 3/4 size paper, like a booklet sewn into the book. Why not full size pages? (And yes, the book is sewn! Thankfully!)
The contrast on some of the photos shown is questionable. In Alexander Rodchenko's "Girl With Leica" (a very famous photo) the contrast is so high you can't really see the Leica. I've seen a better copy of that one. The color photos don't come through as well as they could have on a different paper. But generally I think the reproductions are good. (Better than "good" would have required a more expensive paper, resulting in a more expensive book... but the reproductions are good.)
Nuff said. This is an excellent book which no doubt took eons to compile. The articles are excellent. The photography is great and provides a sweeping look at the 20th century. I think you won't be disappointed (at least in any major way). I was impressed.
Being a Leica photographer myself (and a Nikon photographer, I must say) this book is a must for my shelf. Make room for it.

Great book - its big and may get damaged in shipping if packaging is not of a high quality.
By alan1
An impressive book. Well bound and excellent print on high quality paper. Much bigger than I expected. A temendous treatise on Leica which will take some time to work through. An important Leica M reference. 5 stars for the book and 1 star for Amazon for shipping it in a box with other items and not wrapping the book for protection. My copy came with the corners bent from being placed loosely in an oversized box. The sleave was also torn in transit by other items in the package (CD's and another book). Suggest order it on its own and take the gift wrapping option for added protection. A gem of a book damaged by careless handling on the part of Amazon UK. Shame.

A century of invention documented with love and attention to detail
By C. M. Newland
Received as a Christmas gift; an exhaustive survey of the Leica camera, from its inception in Barnack's notebook to the digital cameras of a century later. Leitz invented 35mm photography (and, essentially, modern photography), and while there were plenty of worthy competitors (Rollei, Contax, etc) the Leica brand continues to enjoy a level of devotion most brands would kill to claim.

The book itself is massive, and filled with some of the most wonderful photography ever captured, by both notable 'names' as well as a slew of amateurs who themselves advanced the form over the years. The numerable essays which fill the book's pages are academic, yet still readable and enjoyable.

This volume is obviously a labor of love, a gift from a number of Leica lovers to the rest of us. If you love and appreciate Leica this book is a must-have for your library.
