About the Author

Bob Bryla has more than 20 years of experience in MIS, ranging from database and data warehouse design to system administration on multiple hardware platforms. He is currently lead designer and data analyst for Land’s End's online store database and handles the DBA activities on Land’s End Oracle Internet databases.

Kevin Loney was named Consultant of the Year by Oracle Magazine in 2002. He is an internationally recognized expert in the design, development, and administration and tuning of Oracle databases. An Oracle developer and database administrator since 1987, Loney has designed and implemented both transactional processing systems and data warehouses.

Simple, precise and easy to understand

This book is written in very simple, precise, straight forward and easy to understand language. There are tons of day to day usage SQLs and examples for everyday dba. Good amount of details in advanced topics like external tables, flashback, SQL replay, advanced security etc., Very useful Hitchhiker's guides and also a cd with code and ebook included. Over all the content is nicely presented.

This is a very important addition to the library of EVERY Oracle professional

I just finished reading through "Oracle Database 12c - The Complete Reference". If you have been using Oracle for a while you are familiar with the title - Kevin and Bob have been publishing revised versions of the book for quite a while. And as the title says, this is not a tutorial or a how-to book. It is a reference book of many of the important topics that an Oracle professional will need to know in order to work effectively with 12c

The chapters cover the material you would think they would cover. Including the new CDB and PDB concepts in 12c. Also important newer - but not new - topics like VPD, TDE, SQL Replay. I was happy to find sections on Tuning but saw little on Data Guard and RMAN. As a DBA, I am not that interested in topics such as XML, Object-SQL, and Java. I would like to see the RAC section be larger. But overall, it is a very important addition to the library of EVERY Oracle professional. Keep the book at home, but keep the electronic copy of the book (on an include CD) with you everywhere.

Missing details about Oracle 12c's Pluggable Database architecture

In my opinion this book is missing details about Oracle 12c's Pluggable Database architecture. I expected specific content about both EM Express and Single/Multitenant configurations due to the subtitle of the book "Administer and Secure a Robust Cloud Based Environment". Although the old database architecture is still available for use, Oracle recommends new 12c databases utilize the single or multitenant pluggable database configuration. There are some screenshots of a CDB/PDB installation, (6 pages on Pluggable Databases in total) but other than that there are very few pages which detail administration tasks and specific architecture information within a "Cloud database" single tenant/ multitenant configuration in 12c. On the other hand, the book does holds good content as a quick reference guide and overview on many different aspects of Oracle databases. Perhaps for new DBAs, this book would be a welcome asset for those who like a quick dictionary type look up of any and all things Oracle on their bookshelf. However, for a more seasoned DBA it doesn't contain the depth I expected strictly based on the titile and subtitile.

In Rome Hildebrand became acquainted with Hans von Marees, whose independence of thought encouraged the younger artist to follow his own bent. After staying in Rome a year and a half Hildebrand returned toG ermany and busied himself for some time with sculpture in Berlin. About the Author
Shozo Sato is a master of traditional Zen arts. His areas of expertise include ikebana (flower arranging), chanoyu (tea ceremony), and Japanese theater, as well as sumi-e. He conducts workshops on ikebana and sumi-e throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe and is the author of numerous books including Ikebana and The Art of Sumi-e. He was the founding director of Japan House at the University of Illinois, where he is Professor Emeritus. Sato resides in Fort Bragg, CA.

Excellent Book

This is the first new Sumi-e book to come out in a while. While it incorporates some material from his earlier books, there is a lot that is new. There are beautiful color photographs of the tools used, and many of step-by-step techniques that I haven't seen in other books. There is a chapter on the relationship between calligraphy and painting, which I have never seen either, in any of the large stack of Sumi-e books I've already acquired, and which is very helpful for those who are at the level to start adding calligraphy to their paintings, as well as for calligraphers who would like to add sumi-e to their skills. (The tools are the same, but the techniques are very different). Painting techniques are thoroughly explored, not just from a technical viewpoint, but also from philosophical and artistical perspectives. There are many beautiful works that the artist has done himself, for inspiration and to illustrate the concepts that are learned in the book. I'm glad this book is in hardback, because it's one I will admire and refer to often. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not an artist and just want to enjoy the paintings.

The definitive Sumi-e book

If you are looking for the modern definitive book on Sumi-e look no further. Comprehensive, beautifully illustrated with Prof. Sato's own work, this is first and foremost a technical manual on the art of ink painting as it's practiced in Japan and China. Demonstrations are numerous and complete in both traditional Sumi-e as well as Suibaku-ga and is profusely illustrated with examples of each. The book includes a DVD in which the author demonstrates in real time various brush strokes and ink application techniques that would be much harder to grasp without the visual element. Additionally included is a concise but very informative equipment survey that, like the rest of the book, is well illustrated with full color photographs; AND the DVD is worth the price on it's own.

Must have for anyone interested in American poetry from the last 50 years

I have a love hate relationship involving this book. I LOVE this book it is one of the only places you can find D.A. Levy's poems. I HATE myself because I have lost it 3 times and I am now on my fourth copy. But this book is great enough where I will buy 4 copies ($65.88) just so i can not be long with out it. It is in my backpack it is on my nightstand. This has given me great perspective within my own writing. Though it could use some more super recent poets (Def jam and some more recent slammers) but over all it is one of the most influential books in my life

About the Author
Michael C. Zusman: Michael is a state court judge by day and a freelance restaurant and food writer at night, working for several local publications in his Portland, Oregon, hometown. Michael is also a serious amateur baker and supplied the bread recipes used by Kenny & Zuke’s Delicatessen. When he’s not spending time with his teenage daughter, keeping tabs on Portland’s vibrant and ever-evolving restaurant scene, or playing with a batch of dough, Michael is a travel fanatic, chalking up miles to any destination with a strong culinary tradition. Singapore, Sydney, and New York City are top-notch, though his favorite restaurant anywhere is Chicago’s Alinea.

Nick Zukin: Nick is the “Zuke” in Kenny & Zuke’s. A prominent Portland food blogger, he approached Ken “Kenny” Gordon in 2005 with a recipe for killer pastrami and the dream of connecting with his heritage.The proposition: open a Jewish deli specializing in house-made pastrami and hand-rolled bagels. After testing the waters selling at the farmers' market and at pop-up brunches, Nick helped open the first of a new wave of Jewish delicatessens focused on producing artisanal eats. Ever versatile, Nick recently debuted a solo venture, Mi Mero Mole, a Mexican restaurant specializing in the street food of Mexico City.

This book is filled with foolproof recipes for so many of our favorites. For years I'd been scouring the web for what "seemed" liked the perfect stuffed cabbage or rugelach, and now every Jewish food recipe I'll ever need is in this one book.

I was a recipe tester for this book and blown away at how easy the recipes were to follow, and how great everything came out! The above mentioned stuffed cabbage ("cabbage rolls" in the book) are now a family favorite and the only recipe I'll ever need for this. The chocolate-fig rugelach is the best. Light crispy outside, tender flaky inside but not at all dry, figgy-chocolate filling, just great.

Other favorites I've made from this book are the pickled onions, pickle relish, challah french toast, blintzes (the easiest crepe recipe ever!), the chicken salads, goulash, oh...and a potato latke recipe that you make in the food processor and pour the batter like pancakes. SO much easier than the traditional method and with great flavor. The traditional recipe is also in the book. The ginger apple sauce in the book goes great with the potato pancakes.

The chocolate dipped macaroons are also a winner. Make sure to let the tops of the cookies get golden colored, that way you have that nice toasted-coconut flavor.

I bought several copies of this book for family and need to buy a few more. This is a great book.

Making Memories Through Food

My connection to Jewish food began decades ago when my friend Geraldine Cohen introduced me to her favorite Jewish deli located on Geary St. in San Francisco. Who would have guessed that sharing stories about her childhood and her father, a rabbi, over pastrami on rye and cheesecake would leave such an indelible impression on this young Asian girl. Although Geri and the deli are long departed, the opportunity to reconnect to the sight, smell, and taste of traditional Jewish fare presented itself by testing recipes for this book.

Matzo ball soup and bagels were a must-try to re-create my memory, followed by bialys, babka, blintzes, brisket, pickled red onion, and others to expand my culinary repertoire. The bagels, bialys, and babka were a delicious success with family and I surprised myself as a beginner-level baker. Now I'm spoiled to having these treats fresh out of the oven. As for the pickles and brisket to babka and blintzes, the aromas of a Jewish deli transformed my kitchen, and it was easily attained through the recipe instructions. And so the journey begins.

This book and its recipes, along with the bonus historical references, beautiful close-up shots of food, and sprinkles of humor throughout, is a joy to own. Go make and bake some memories!

Try it, you'll like it.

First a bit of disclosure. I was one of the recipe testers for this book. The good news is that in addition to getting to try a lot of these recipes over a year ago, everything I made turned out well.

The whole reason I signed up to test the recipes was for the pastrami. It's delicious and well worth the effort.

I'm not a baker, but I made the Challah and it's turned out perfectly all three times I'm made it and it's getting prettier every time as I learn to handle the dough and weave the loaves.

Many of the recipes like the borscht, chicken salad and brisket come in seasonal variations. It's fun to tailor the recipes to the seasons and have several options to choose from.

The Caper and Red Onion Potato Salad is my go to potato salad these days. It's always gobbled up and I now make a double batch whenever I take it to share.

I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I've ordered a case of books to give to friends and family. I bought them because I'm sure they'll enjoy cooking and serving the recipes as much as I have.

Two boys' review: Good read before you trick or treat

The book's message, "appearances can be quite deceiving," focuses on a spooky, old house with an elderly woman named Miz MGrizz. The little bears learn to not judge people unkindly by their appearance.

This is a tricky message as so much of the parental advice prior to Halloween is for kids to be on their guard.

The book does reinforce some great Halloween safety messages:

1. Stay in your own neighborhood.
2. Don't eat the treats until you get home and Mama Bear inspects them.

Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Like the book The Berenstain Bears' New Neighbors, The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat is a book tackling the subject of prejudice and not judging people by appearances.

However, like the other book, Papa's animosity and presumption is just too over the top--and, in my opinion, reinforces prejudice rather than challenges it.

For example, on the next to the last page, the kids are happily eating their take from Trick or Treating. Papa asks them where the beautiful candy apples came from. Brother and Sister inform him that they came from old Miz McGrizz.

"From that scary-looking old grouch puss that lives down Crooked Lane?", he asks. While the kids were surprised at Mizz McGrizz's kindness and friendliness and learned a lesson about rumors and assumption, the book ends on a rather sour note with Papa Bear's judgmentalism. In my opinion, it reinforces stereotype about the elderly and small-town rumors about "scary old people" who live in a "haunted house".

I feel that The Berenstain Bears and the Prize Pumpkin is a far better book to celebrate the Fall season (although that one is more about thankfulness/Thanksgiving).

This book has great illustrations because of the night scenes, to be sure, but I don't like how the ending focuses mostly on Papa Bear's insult against Mizz McGrizz (although it's great that the kids, at least, realized the error of their assumption based on neighborhood legend...)

Good message- if it weren't a Halloween story

The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat is a book I remember well from my childhood. The story starts out innocently enough with brother and sister bear comparing each other's costumes. Like most Berenstain Bears books, the story unwravels into a deeper subplot; a spooky elderly neighbor from across the street that brother and sister are afraid of. Papa tends to side with both, while Mama, being perhaps the only sensible family member of the series, tends to disagree with both as "appearances can be deciving" and that the cubs should give the women a chance.

When trick or treating comes along, Brother and Sister are still frightened by the whole ordeal, along with the other cubs coming along with them for their "trick or treat date". The Too Tall Gang, being much too trouble for their own good, randomly appear out of no where (as gangs tend to do) and have some plans of their own for the spooky neighbor, holding rolls of toilet paper in their hands for some good old Halloween fun. Brother and sister appear aprehensive about their plans for crimes, but decide to do so anyway. As the gang approches the house, they are stopped abruptly before the chance to toilet paper the women's house as she steps out to see what all the fuss is about.

The cubs are exsaperated with fear to be invited into the women's house. When they enter the house, however, they are shocked to be greeted by a batch of candy apples! Noticing none appear to have been take, Brother and Sister ask her about this, where she implies that no one had come all night. Brother and sister then realize how silly they were for being so biogted against their neighbor. Despite her old age and creepy looking tree house, she is a kind old lady who means well, with delicious candy apples for all. Both come home that night, shocking Papa out of his ignorance and having Mama Bear smile gloatingly in an "I told you so sort of way" as we learn along with the cubs that, indeed it's true, appearances are deciving.

It is when the book ends with Brother and Sister delightfully biting out of a candy apple, sinking their teeth into it's caramel coating that the book takes a disturbing turn for the worst. This is Halloween, not a day where all your family knows each other and gives you non poisioned, razor free treats. Well, maybe in Bear Country, where everyone seems to know each other, but no. The elderly women described in the book is a complete and absolute stranger. However, despite Mama Bear's strict warnings of staying in their own neighborhood as a hint of stranger danger for politically corret parents, Brother and Sister go into the house of a women they don't know, and Mama and Papa do not object to this. In fact, they encourage the chomping of their candy apples!

This is not a bad book, mind you, despite the poorly choosen aesop. The moral of the story is actually a pretty good one: Don't judge a book by it's cover. It also implies elderly respect since, as one can articulate, the women in this story is a creepy looking old hag, who tends to be a sweet caretaker with sweets for all who dare but enter. The only thing about this book that always got under my skin and just couldn't settle with me was the fact that a story about trusting a stranger is told amongst Halloween night. It's a rather weird and ironic message for the theme. And no, I'm not telling you this book is trash that should be disputed into a paper shredder by tomorrow night. It means well... it's just... another puzzling aspect of my childhood. But buy and it shall be a puzzling aspect of your child's life too.

Quite possibly the worst book I've ever read

Take a look at the cover. Look at it. Do you see that lady covering her face with her hands? That's me after reading this book. Why? Why did I read this book? I AM FILLED WITH SHAME AND REGRET.

Again, we have another *Twilight* clone, but this book makes *Twilight* look like the Great American Novel. Reading this book is like entering a kind of prison where you are forced to hear every inane thought of the most shallow, dimmest girl in the world. Actually, it's not *like* that. It IS that. Luce, our heroine, has been sent to a reform school because a boy, like, spontaneously combusted at her fancy boarding school, and she was the only witness, so the police think she was somehow involved. *Fallen* follows Luce's year at this reform school, wherein she carefully examines the cuteness and dateability factor of every boy she encounters. Of course there's a *dark, tortured* guy who immediately attracts her attention. He flips her off when he catches her looking at him, so naturally she instantly falls for him. In fact, she becomes creepily stalkerish, using her one sort-of friend to steal his school file so she can learn more about him.

The pacing is abominable. We get more than 300 pages of nothing but "OMG he's cute, does he like me? Why doesn't he like me? Oh there's another cute boy! Is he cuter than Daniel? I don't know! Oh, what shall I do? Oh no, another boy caught on fire!" We are mired in boy-crazy teenage-girl minutiae and Luce's increasingly bad decisions. Then the final 30 or so pages are filled with many WHAT THE WHAT moments, hugely telegraphed plot points, and jam-packed with mysteries with no explanations only as an excuse to continue this drivel through not one, but two more books. Oh, we do get one explanation--a total "secret villain spends three or four pages talking about his/her diabolical plan and recapping everything [nothing] that has happened in the book so far" maneuver--but we wish we hadn't.

In addition, are we supposed to swoon over Daniel because he's broody and a bad boy? Not to spoil what happens in the book (since so very little happens), but given what Daniel knows about Luce and him and the history of them together, he is exceptionally selfish, or stupid, or both.

The writing itself is laughably bad. My favorite bad line might be: "Luce could hear the squish of her own mortification as all of Sword & Cross got its viewing of the meat-loaf-coated new girl." Yes, you read that correctly: THE SQUISH OF HER OWN MORTIFICATION.

I realize this book falls under "paranormal romance," but pretty much nothing in this book is believable.

And now let me once again mimic the cover image of this book, by hiding my face in my hands. Do you hear that sound? That's the squish of my mortification.

Fallen & Flawed

Quick & Dirty: Ultimately this tale isn't captivating and lacks a real villain.

The Review:

Marketing almost sold me on this book, but the book itself couldn't close the deal. With a beautiful cover, the promise of a tragic love story, a creepy, gothic boarding school setting, and fallen angels, I expected a compelling read. Unfortunately, Fallen is a disappointment.

Fallen's protagonist, Luce, is a suspected arsonist, and claims that she's constantly stalked by malevolent shadows. Her parents, at their breaking point, send her to Sword & Cross, a boarding school. Once at Sword & Cross, Luce battles the typical "new girl" problems and immediately catches the eye of two hot guys at the school. She finds herself drawn to the mysterious Daniel and is determined to find out more about him and his past.

Fallen is a flawed novel and I had to struggle to finish. Fallen was crafted in such a way as to make the story predictable and ultimately doing little to keep the reader engaged. I knew Fallen was a series so I didn't expect the overall story arc to unfold at a breakneck pace, but I did expect something to actually happen. The pacing of the story is slow with little to no action. In my opinion, a lot of the chapters that were written really didn't do much to move the plot forward.

I think the most damning aspect for me is the author's inversion of the Show vs. Tell concept. Meaning, Ms. Kate did more telling than showing me what I needed as a reader. Daniel and Luce are supposed to have this amazing connection and be hopelessly in love, yet none of this is shown to the reader. Ms. Kate didn't establish enough background about Daniel and Luce's relationship to make this a believable or particularly compelling love story. I never established an emotional connection with the characters and their plights simply didn't resonate with me. The dialog was flat and character descriptions were inconsistent. There wasn't enough worldbuilding and as a result the story suffered.

My second gripe concerns the lack of characterization. The difficulty in writing immortal/supernatural characters for a sophisticated audience is that you have to respect their reality. For an immortal character, Daniel certainly lacks imagination, maturity, skill and purpose. His brooding and skulking around didn't make me believe that he was dangerous or a bad boy for that matter. Luce came off as a creepy stalker, pathetic, naïve, weak, and at times really annoying. The narrative voices of the secondary characters aren't particularly unique. With no real character development and growth, it was hard to care about them. I'm not sure if I will invest the time to read the second book in the series, Torment, because Fallen did not grab me.

Overall, Fallen falls prey to clichés. It's all buildup with no climax, and that left me more frustrated than satisfied. Ms. Kate seems to have left key elements of the story for later installments, and a bevy of plot devices weakened the story. With little depth to the characters or plot, I fear some seasoned and savvy readers of the genre will have a hard time falling for Fallen.

Notable Scene:

She looked up into a maelstrom of shadows. A spectrum of shades of gray and deepest black. She should only be able to see as far as the ceiling overhead, but the shadows seemed somehow to extend beyond its limits. Into a strange and hidden sky. They were all tangled up in each other, and yet they were distinct.

Angels.

If you didn't know, this is obviously about the fallen sort of angels. Title anyone? This book was without a doubt the most amazing and well written book I've read in a long time, and one of the best stories by Ms.Kate. She is an amazing author. These characters are so lovable and in-depth, the romance is flawlessly amazing. Loved this book.
