Grade 9 Up—Ardelius follows the frenetic course of an all-consuming teen love affair from first chance sexual encounter to inevitable atrophy as everyday insecurities encroach. Told through short conversational passages, the narrative is comprised largely of dialogue between Morris and Betty and glimpses into the couple's quiet, intimate moments. Such scenes are interspersed with their inner thoughts (mainly his) and snapshots of Morris's mother and father, who are respectively flighty and manic-depressive. It is these parental weaknesses that feed Morris's own fears about the attraction between two people and indirectly spur the downward trajectory of the relationship. Ardelius's prose, translated from Swedish, poetically bottles the universal delirium and unsustainable pace of first love. American readers expecting a typical teen love story, however, will not find it here. Certain aspects of the story, such as the nonchalance of Betty's mom when her daughter's boyfriend walks downstairs in the morning for breakfast, have a distinctly European ring. With a heightened emotional sensibility tethered to a knack for pinpointing revealing details, Ardelius maneuvers the quick story through the wide-eyed, simultaneously painful, joyous, and consuming aspects of first love: marveling at what life was like before meeting someone; trying to imagine the emptiness you’d feel without that person; wondering if there are limits to what you can say or do; arriving at the scary point where you define yourself entirely against the other; and then the slow, descending fog of doubt. Passages are intentionally oblique at times, but the emotional resonance is sweeping. Teens struggling through their own issues of identity and codependency in relationships will find much reflection in these surprisingly sophisticated yet accessible passages that show that love is often one of life’s hardest trials. Williams intertwines two stories of exploitation in this timely novel set in South Africa and New York City. Throughout his life, Seraki, a South African teenager, has witnessed destruction caused by hatred and violence. By joining the cast of a locally produced musical that exposes the plight of black South Africans, he finds a means to express his fear and pent-up outrage. The play travels to Broadway and Seraki discovers that even in America, the land of opportunity, he cannot escape corruption. While his people continue their fight for independence in their homeland, Seraki and the other actors attempt to free themselves from the control of a manipulative director. This tale, culminating in two separate celebrations of triumph, reveals the effects of oppression on both a psychological and a sociological level. Though Williams's knowledge of dramatics and adolescent perspectives adds authenticity, his occasionally contrived plot comes off as Cinderella-ish, with the protagonist going from rags to riches. Ultimately, this book will have the greatest impact on mature readers who are able to draw parallels between apartheid and the injustices that can prevail in a "free society." Ages 12-up.

Grade 7 Up-- Seraki Mandindi lives in Soweto, South Africa. The realities of life for him are stark--his family is poor, his brother Phakane is in police detention, and his relationship with his father is angry. But things change dramatically when he joins the cast of a musical about township life, and the actors go to New York City to play on Broadway. After the independent-minded Seraki gets on the wrong side of a dictatorial producer, he learns that the players have been swindled out of most of their earnings, and he and another cast member provoke a confrontation that results in victory for them all. When Seraki arrives home at the satisfying but perhaps too tidy conclusion, Phakane is there to meet him. The motif of the crocodile is skillfully woven into the plot. The feeling of optimism in South Africa in the heady days of 1990 is reflected in Seraki's sense that anything is possible. The township and its people are powerfully portrayed; by contrast, many of the actors remain unknown to readers. The plot is convincing, with the exception of Seraki's refusal to tell his mother that his imprisoned brother is alive. Good pacing and the first-person, present-tense narrative give the events immediacy. As a novel about the black experience in South Africa, the unpleasant realities of the theatrical world, or a young man learning to look after his own interests in a difficult and demanding world, this is a worthwhile and compelling read. --Susan Giffard, Englewood Public Library, NJ

Seraki's Soweto life takes a new direction when, almost by accident, he lands a part in a musical drama. The angry play is called iSezela, after a powerful, menacing crocodile in African myth, symbol of many kinds of oppression. The crocodile haunts Seraki: His brother Phakane is a political prisoner; the Naughty Boys, a gang of urban terrorists, is extorting money from his family; and the play, initially a liberating experience, becomes a nightmarish trap after its wild success in South Africa leads to a Broadway run and the director, Mosake, changes from inspirational leader to violent, exploitative tyrant. The author's theatrical experience stands him in good stead; readers will get a good sense of the work involved in a stage production and the heady feeling when it all comes together. While his lurid, harshly ironic portrait of N.Y.C. is unconvincing, Williams's insider's view of South Africa will open some eyes. The book ends on several hopeful notes: Seraki and the rest of the cast confront Masake, negotiate fairer contracts, and celebrate Nelson Mandela's release and also Phakane's--the crocodile's grip is slipping. ``So many things are happening in this country, Seraki, so many good things!'' About the Author
Tim O'Connor is an award-winning journalist who has written about golf for thirty years and plays the game avidly. Tim is the editor of Single Plane Golfer magazine published by the Graves Golf Academy. Tim has written three previous golf books, including The Feeling of Greatness: The Moe Norman Story, and he edited The Final Missing Piece of Ben Hogan s Secret Puzzle. Tim has written for GOLF, Golf World, LINKS, Golfweek, SCOREGolf, and Golf Canada. He was golf columnist for The Financial Post and covered golf for the radio division of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Tim was named International Network of Golf Reporter of the Year three straight years (1994-96). He was music critic for the Canadian Press news agency and has done communications consulting for the golf industry. Tim lives in Rockwood, Ontario, with his wife Sandy and sons, Corey and Sean.

Understanding Moe

Having discovered Moe's single plane swing I was curious about how he came to it and why he didn't achieve more with it. This book certainly gives a great insight into these issues. If Moe had not been so different we would all be poorer for not having his method which in my opinion is how golf should be taught. While he achieved much in golf and obviously amazed the many who were lucky enough to see him in person, those same differences limited his achievements.
This book tells a great story about a great but flawed man in an easily readable manner.

Moe deserves more recognition for his contribution to golf and this book certainly assists in understanding the man and his legacy, the true single plane swing.

I was hoping for a little more insight in the man. This book seems to me to make the same points, page after page, chapter after chapter. Moe continually sabotaged himself due to his overwhelming fear of the burden of success............got it. That could have been stated in a pamphlet rather than a book. I would have like to have had more 'real life' examples of how this fear manifested itself in his life and the life of those around him. Not a bad book. It just didn't provide the in-depth look, accompanied by examples, of a very troubled man that I had hoped for.

The Flagship of Moe Norman Biographies.

I wanted to know more about Moe Norman, and I made the mistake of reading "Moe & Me" by Lorne Rubenstein first because the cover looked more modern. As it turned out, "Moe & Me" was more of an author centered memoir that did not give a full account of Moe's life.

"The Feeling of Greatness," however, left no stone unturned in the life of Moe Norman. O'Connor did a masterful job of blending Moe's playing career and personal life. O'Connor also went to great lengths to discredit -- but of course, still mention -- unverifiable myths, even those that came straight from Moe's mouth. He separates the legendary folklore surrounding Moe as either true or untrue. He pointed out which stories about Moe were exaggerated and often revealed a more realistic version told by those who shared the moment with Moe.

O'Connor organized the chapters quite nicely. The book moves in chronological order. O'Connor was even able to construct a coherent narrative out of Moe's life, a difficult task for any biographer. Most of the book pieced together Moe's playing career with whatever stories may have blossomed about Moe in certain tournaments. There is one chapter toward the end that does a complete analysis of Moe's swing. Such an analysis was a break from the narrative, but it did not appear out of place, as it stood sandwiched between a chapter about Moe's psychological health and a chapter on Moe's declining physical health.

Moe Norman is by no means a household name in the United States, but for those of us who play golf that hear about Moe's legend for the first time, there is no doubt a sparked interest. One's journey to learn about Moe may begin on youtube looking for an analysis of his swing or his numerous clinics that were recorded and posted. If one's interest in Moe is not quenched through video footage of his swing alone, "The Feeling of Greatness" is the beginning and end of everything one could want to know about golf's all time greatest ball striker.

To put things broadly, this small collections by Ranciere is essentially a critique of "The Society of the Spectator." Ranciere's dialectical aesthetics of politics employs nuanced "aesthetic regimes" in order to unearth internal logics of political/aesthetic transformation. In particular, his comments in `The Intolerable Image,' go a long way in launching a critique of the work of art as a dispositif of visibility. That is, the very notion that the image can serve as the simultaneous link between representation, knowledge, and action is revealed as a groundless politics. A highly thoughtful and rich text.

Ranciere on art and the political.

This is a good book and the translation reads well. I don't know where the third essay in this book comes from ("Aesthetic Separation, Aesthetic Community"). It is not from Le spectateur émancipé. It is not indicated in the book, but it here replaces the third essay in the French edition and that essay, "Les paradoxes de l'art politique" which is not here. While there is an essay entitled "The Paradoxes of Political Art" in the collection "Dissensus," that does not seem to be the same essay as the one from Le spectateur émancipé.

But aside from this bit of confusion, the text is great and the different essays still cover roughly the same territory of thought. The "Aesthetic Separation, Aesthetic Community" essay is in fact particularly enlightening for outlining his understanding of the aesthetics of knowledge. The first essay, "The Emancipated Spectator," is another highlight in terms of developing Rancière's thinking on aesthetics and politics.

The Artscroll English Tanach

Although the script is very small it's understandable because this book is packed with great information. I love it. There are great maps and information about the temple.

I like it

Hashem is the traditional name for God in the Levant, and I like it. This edition of the Tanach uses that name and is the primary reason I bought it. The print is very, very small and I have to use a magnifying glass, so don't read as much from it as I'd have liked.

Another plus is that the language used leans to the poetic. I like that very much.

There is a problem here and there where paraphrasing of the original text skews meaning and that is the main criticism of this translation that I found on the internet before ordering it. Having read all of Genesis, I have to agree - the translators shouldn't have done this.

I'm not sorry I bought this, but it isn't as good as I had hoped.

My Second Tanach

I had the JPS pocket Tanach and purchased this only because I thought it was going to be full size. It's not, it's as small as the JPS, but it's beautifully bound and has nice commentary in it. I now use this Tanach for my reading.
