A practical guide to building automata

When I started building my first automaton I searched the web for information and guidance. You can find examples of nice automata, some excellent explanations of how gears, cams, levers and cranks work, and a lot of great videos of finished projects.
But what is difficult to find is a practical guide to actually making a project. That's where the author comes in. The title says it all, Wood Automata Tips and Tricks.
Ken Schweim has built a lot of wooden mechanical devices and you will learn much from him. He teaches you how to build a project using basic tools and materials you can find most anywhere and explains everything in a practical down-to-earth voice. It's like sitting down in his workshop and having him walk you through the concepts, engineering, and building of an automaton. He even provides a simple guide to understanding the proportions of the human body so you can build wooden figures that look right.
He goes into detail about cutting parts correctly, suggests which materials work best, and provides guidance on how to handle the constant assembly/disassembly required when building an automaton project.
If you are really interested in learning to make wooden automata, this book is the most affordable and practical guide you will find.

clear instructions - good starter book - well organized - graphics nicely done - usually like instructional books
as hard copy but this one translates into this version nicely - would recommend

GREAT

I like the way he started with making the frame and then went on to the fun stuff. His hinged figure is good and can easily be applied to animals. His moving parts section is easy to under stand.Automata is fun and Mr Schweim makes it even more so.
